Not Just another "Statistic"
By Laurie Ann Sasser

My husband's name is Jeremy Shane Sasser. He is currently serving time in Louisiana at Winn Correctional Center in Winn Parish. He was arrested in Florida for Absconding his parole when he was forced to move from Louisiana because of Katrina or be homeless. He's a very well educated man with degree's from McNeese State University in computer Programming and Computer Engineering. He has multiple vocational degrees in Office Systems Technology. He's a wonderful father to his children and an even better husband. I love and support husband 100%.

Even though he has done wrong in the past it does not justify the treatment he received or the way the justice system is doing him. I don't dispute that ou should pay for your crimes, he doesn't either. But does that mean that he must endure living everyday in in-humane conditions in a facility that condones sex between inmates or live in a facility that runs rampit with diseases both non-terminal and deadly? My husband is a good man that made some bad decisions yes, but where do you draw the line? If there is anyone out there that will listen, I would love to get feedback and advice. My husband has gone through so much from no medical treatment to many different types of abuse. My husband doesn't deserve that thype of treatment. He has always put others before himself. And still does. I love my husband and don't think this is right. I thought prisons were supposed to be about rehabilitation but all this facility is concerned with is hearding inmates like cattle. Both myself and my husband want people to know that everyone incarcerated aren't just lost causes. Every life is work something. Nobody should be forced to have to live or be treated like this . I've also included a few words from my husband. I thank anyone and everyone for listening. Please feel free to comment. Thank you for your time.

Sincerely,
Laurie Ann Sasser

Hello. My name is Jeremy Sasser and yes I'm an inmate in prison, but by no means am I a statistic. I want everyone to know that the Louisiana Prison System is in no way trying to rehabilitate anyone! Oh Sure, they make a good show if need be! But the truth will come out sooner or later. Everyone makes some mistakes in life, nobody's perfect. I want to tell everyone both in prison and not that you always have to keep your head high and remember that your alwasy going to be more than a number. I've endured a lot and the only people I can thank for me getting through it all is God, my Wife and my kids. My wife is the strongest, most loving woman I've ever known! She's been through so much dealing with all that we've been through. I don't want people thinking that I'm just another inmate looking for sympathy or a hand out! I'm not and never will be a statistic. In closing I'd like to say that if rules are made, then don't they pertain to everyone? And does the punishment truly fit the crime?

Sincerely,

Jeremy Sasser # 390716

Hey Rob,
I want you to know that I belong to a yahoo chat group called the inmate wives club. I gave them your website info www.prisonpartners.com . And the www.BOPWATCHDOG.com   info on Jeremy's story. You wouldn't believe this. They're printing out our story and sending it to their husbands that are incarcerated. Can you believe that. They're also copying down your contact info for themselves and their husbands too. I thought you might be interested in knowing that.

So far there's no change where Jeremy's at. Everything's still the same. He has lost his phone privileges though. We did a 3 way phone call on July 18th so he could talk to his Mom and he got a write up for that and lost his store and phone for 8 weeks. I think that's harsh. Why aren't they allowed to do 3 way phone calls anyway. The calls are still monitored so there's no way they can say anything that won't be heard. Regardless if it's me that's talking or his Mom. So I don't understand why they can't do 3 way phone calls. It just bewilders me.

But I wanted to keep you updated on how well our story is reaching other inmates. Hopefully it will help Jeremy too.

Well, I guess I better get off here. I'll keep you posted on our progress. Thanks for everything you have done for us.

Talk to you soon.

Laurie Sasser

A Message to the Inmates and their Spouses and our Responsibility as Ex Offenders from Robert Paisola

I want you to know that I personally take this site www.PrisonPartners.com and www.BOPWatchdog.com very seriously. To the men and women who read this, just think if your loved one were in this situation, what would you do?  I am committing tremendous resources to ensure that the laws are changed to make sure that once released, offenders have a chance. I am going to testify in Congress on the Crack Cocaine desparitym which is nothing but a hateful racial divide,

To the families of the inmates of that read this, send this to your loved ones, we get hundreds of letters per week and believe me , they are listening. Jeremy Sasser was once just an inmate, however now that inmate has the voice of the world at his hands, That is power. You too can have this.

Send us your letters from inside the institution, We will post them . You will see the difference.  Send them to

The Death of Compassion

The following statistical analysis does not rely upon persuasion.  It relies upon facts published by the United States government.

After reviewing these facts there is no other conclusion that can be made except this:  Since George Bush II has ascended into office, Compassion has died a stingy death.

The cold hard facts...from Rehabilitated.org

Year-by-Year Facts:

Acts of Clemency 1900 to 2001 average annually:               225

Acts of Clemency by George H. Bush average annually:        19

Note:  Given our population growth, if the average annual pardon rate of the 1920's was in force today, we would have in excess of 1,000 per year.  As shown above, we have only average 19 for the last 7 years!

Conclusion:

The conclusion - aside from the fact that Compassion has no quarter in today's White House - is that the pardon power of the presidency doesn't work.  It is broken and there is no one in the Executive Branch who cares to fix it.

SOLUTION:  Pass legislation at the federal level (and all state levels not already providing for recognition of rehabilitation) granting access to fitness hearings as allowed by Congressman Charley Rangel current "Second Chance Act for Ex-Offenders of 2007."  Click HERE to read the bill as of February 21, 2007.  Congressman Rangel's Second Chance Act (SCA) would permit persons convicted of certain non-violent federal offenses to seek expungement (clearing) of the conviction by filing a petition with the federal judge who rendered sentencing.

While Congressman Rangel's proposed legislation is a good start it simply does not go far enough and we will continue trying to broaden its coverage.

For example, what difference does it make 5, 10 or 15 years after a person is released from prison and during this interim period having led a civil life and provided the community with continuing services, that the person had a so-called "crime of violence" - which can be interpreted as a burglary, a petty theft, getting into a fight with one's spouse, etc.  For example, 18 USC § 16, defines "crime of violence" as:

(a) an offense that has as an element the use, attempted use, or threatened use of physical force against the person or property of another, or

(b) any other offense that is a felony and that, by its nature, involves a substantial risk that physical force against the person or property of another may be used in the course of committing the offense.

Thus, a "teenager" convicted of joy-riding would have a conviction for a "crime of violence."  Rangel's bill doesn't take into consideration factors that should be allowed to the discretion of a federal judge.  We request that attention be brought to some of these issues.

Additionally, Rangel's proposed legislation requires that the petition for expungement be filed in the sentencing court.  During the completion of a lengthy federal sentence and a five-year waiting period required to seek expungement, a lot can certainly happen - including moves from East Coast to West Coast.  Thus, any legislation should allow a person seeking expungement to apply in the federal judicial district that is the place of their habitual abode.

Nevertheless, HR623 is an admirable start and the TRP supports it fully and is diligently work for its passage.

Our Growing Broad-Based Coalition:

Why do we need a "coalition"?

A coalition is "the union of diverse things into one ... group; the growing together of parts" for a common purpose, according to Princeton University¹.

And so the Members of the TRP Coalition have come together to work for passage of Congressman Charlie Rangel's HR 623, the Second Chance Act of 2007 and, thereby, level the playing field for federal ex-offenders who now, despite years of civility and good works are yet denied employment, housing, educational opportunities and entry into the professions.  Virtually no State imposes such horrific burdens upon their formerly condemned.  In fact, Congressman Rangel stated on the Floor of Congress that the federal penal system is so harsh it literally drives good people back to prison.

Come, review the stellar Members of our Coalition, and strive to join them and commit yourself to building a better tomorrow for thousands upon thousands of Americans - all good people and all deserving of your time.

Below are the members of the coalition who have come together to work for the passage of the Second Chance Act of 2007:

The Aleph Institute:  Serving society for nearly a quarter of a century, the Aleph Institute is a national, not-for-profit 501(c)(3), publicly-supported charitable institution founded by Rabbi Sholom D. Schneerson, O.B.M. The Aleph Institute organizes and supervises rabbinical visitations to hundreds of state and federal prisons and jails across the United States and fields hundreds of inquiries from chaplains and inmates around the country with respect to Jewish laws and holiday practices.

Founded in 1983 as a subsidiary of Prison Fellowship Ministries, Justice Fellowship works to have a presence in local, state and federal jurisdictions.  "Justice Fellowship promotes criminal justice reforms that reflect a notion of justice and works hand-in-hand with other organizations throughout the United States.  We will work hard to see the Second Chance Act passed in 2007," President Patrick J. Nolan stated.

US prisons have become big business, housing 25% of all the people in the world behind bars, the largest prison population on the planet. In a frenzy of criminal justice, we have turned our backs on the founding principles of this nation to produce state and federal prisons at an alarming rate—in the 1990s, opening 1 every 15 days in depressed rural towns and communities. Private correctional companies are entering the industry, appearing on the NY stock exchange, with an eye on the bottom line. Under this prison-industrial complex, we are locking up 1 in 3 young black men in this nation, moving them far from home, and stripping them of the right to vote, the possibility of holding decent jobs and the dignity of supporting themselves and their families. US prisons are holding the strangest of reunions: grandfathers, fathers and sons behind bars. There is no paying of their debt to society, no clean slate. One Nation Under Guard can inspire change by presenting the big picture of a US prison system that values the bottom line more than it does solutions, at enormous cost. Most people are unaware that this is happening. Current TV viewers will begin to see the real need for restorative justice, and will be moved toward supporting and joining those who are working for it. They will begin to demand change to create a prison system that delivers justice for all, not injustice for a marginalized minority.
